What's so special about Shivaji? In this new, compelling book from author Leida Wheeler, find out more about Shivaji ... Shivaji Bhosale, with the royal title Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was a Maratha sovereign who founded the Maratha Empire, which, at its peak, covered much of the Indian subcontinent, encompassing a territory of over 2.8 million km??. Shivaji as an aristocrat of the Bhosle clan led a resistance to free the Maratha people from the Sultanate of Bijapur and the Mughal Empire and established a Hindavi Swarajya. He created an independent Maratha kingdom with Raigad as its capital. He was crowned as Chhatrapati of the Maratha empire in 1674. He established a competent and progressive civil rule with the help of a well-regulated and disciplined military and well-structured administrative organizations. He also innovated rules of military engagement, pioneering the "Shiva sutra" or ganimi kava, which leveraged strategic factors like geography, speed, surprise and focused pinpoint attacks to defeat his larger and more powerful enemies From a small contingent of 2,000 soldiers inherited from his father, he created a formidable force of 100,000 soldiers. The book clearly demonstrates that Shivaji was quite a secular guy. The book shows how he had some Muslim Generals and was certainly not the Hindu zealot as he is touted to be. He was a simple brave man who wanted power just like anybody else in his time or now.

Since Afzal Khan was there in power then, he had to deal with him, to get power he eliminated him in a peace meeting. Accounts vary that he had no intention to negotiate but went there with tiger claws to tear Afzal Khan apart and thus lured the opponent into a trap carefully laid out. His opponents call it deceit and treachery but his supporters call it bravery, depends on whose side are you on.

But all said and done he was not as he is painted out to be - a more than human myth which he wasn't and would have never wanted to be seen as such. Subsequent narrow minded self seeking non-religious people who wanted to use religion for political ends hijacked him and projected him as someone a Hindu against Muslims. Extensive original reading (not recent writings) will reveal that Shivaji never thought on racist (communal) lines as so many paragraphs will prove in this book.

I would like to absolve him of the communal and racist allegation and the label pasted on him for personal gains by polarization. It was an intra-Indian fight for power, not a Hindu Muslim war. Never.
